An atypical method of creating film material can happen far away from the camera. Sixteen millimeter clear film leader (above) used as a medium, upon which color, scratching, inkjet printing was applied. The challenge here is to get as creative as possible within the confines of this thin strip, while bearing in mind the probable resulting animation that will occur upon running it through a steenbeck machine.
On some strips, focus was given to the changing form, highlighted through minor alterations to a given shape. On other strips, the change of color, rather than shape, took priority. Color washes, produced by mixing inks and solvents, were used, and were mainly inspired by color field paintings, and light installations by artist Robert Irwin.
