This model, created from basswood, is meant to bring my interpretation of one corner of Ritchie's painting into a 3-dimensional presence. The model can best be thought of as a translation of the word "release".
By bringing the flat image into a tangible bodily form, one is now capable to examine the model from different angles and perspectives. What initially seemed so adherent to the shape of a volcano slowly releasing its lava can now be seen as fumes; as a flower with extending petals; even as an abstract conical shape that harbors a geometric treatment of organic form. Three dimensionality allows us to be liberated for what a two-dimensional image may dictate on our perception.
// To achieve the appropriate curvature, the basswood used had to be soaked in water for a day's time. //
