What is it like to allow the outside pour into you? An exercise has been deviced to assign priority to an artist's external stimuli. The point: more freedom, less intention, less control.

The notes designed on this page have been extracted from a music piece composed by Lebanese violinist Claude Chalhoub. Chalhoub's work clearly blends his middle eastern influences with ambient and western taste. In the selected piece, Kaa, he dominates a cosmic background with Arab strings on violin.

A timeline was put together to translate the auditory information into visuals. Each note was born after several replays of a particular fragment of the music piece,

The notes were further translated into a tangible form. Initially, the intention was to create them out of clay and wire, as these resembled the line gestures the most. However, it proved most challenging to create the notes as such. An attempt to bring wire and clay to obeythe visual form consumed at least 45 minutes per piece, hence defeating the whole purpose of spontenaety.

Instead, the notes were made out of black clay and India black ink on paper, forming 26 bas-relief characters, speaking to the entire piece.

Play Chalhoub's Kaa.
