Wladimir Baranoff-Rossine is a Ukrainian-born pioneer. Among others of his time, he received training in Abstract Impressionism in Russia, followed by the practice of Futurism, Cubism and Orphism in France. As abstract painting evolved, the musical ideal sparked a movement to incorporate an element of increasing importance for the new century: time. “Color music,” “mobile color,” or “lumia” emerged as composers, musicians, and painters developed the art of projected light with the goal of connecting light to music.
Baranoff-Rossine developed the Optophonic Piano. When the instrument's keys are played, music was “translated” by coloured disks projected on a screen.
