Visualizing Music. As a young child learning to play the piano, I was fascinated by the idea that notes and ledger lines could be translated into sound. Even after several years of playing music, a sheet of music, for me, never equated to the final product. The music on the sheet was not in and of itself alive; the music came alive only after struggle and heartache, repetition, playing hands separately- the translation from print to sound was not a direct nor emotionless one. Even once I could play a song well, it was more than the elements on the page that were responsible for the movement in my fingers.

This project addresses the idea of turning a sheet of music into a living document, testifying to the hardships, struggles, and joys of music making and music playing.

I searched for a piece of music that would be a suitable backdrop for the notion of a living document: one that was old, worn, perhaps played, not played, or contemplated, but passed through many hands.

Within the pages I have addressed the interplay of music those who participate in it.
