tape experiments

Language as Virus. For the tape experiments, I was interested in two concepts: media content and context. I addressed media content by sampling and re-texting a morning's top news stories. A series of cut-up progressions led to 3 generated news stories, which though absurdist still address the original content and expose what Burroughs called "viruses". These cut-up techniques were originally devised by Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs in 1959.

Read the news

These news stories were then recontextualized by incorporation into a telephone conversation. I re-cut the news with gossip, to see what new virus would be created.
