The Design and Performance Interdisciplinary Committee is the brainchild of Dr. Ellen Wartella, Dean of the College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. The Committee was formed in the first months of the new millenium. Its members recognize the profound impact of the digital age on the university as a whole and the need to consider this impact in more than purely technological terms. The ways in which the university currently defines and delimits the boundaries of its departments, schools and colleges should be tested such that they may function less as independent units than as permeable channels of investigation. The committee dedicated itself to the following:

  • Identifying university resources that can and should be shared across campus; clarifying the inventories and directions of myriad campus facilities so they may be considered in cross-campus intitiatives.

  • Minimizing duplicate resources, discouraging isolationism, and fostering a university that functions much like a web, where the pressure of one discovery may vibrate the entire structure.

  • Encouraging and making a commitment to foster cross-listed courses and courses team-taught between departments given that modes of investigation and production in one discipline are valuable directives for new directions in another.

  • Seeking the edge of the possible meanings of the term "interdisciplinary"; maintaining all the rigor of the disciplines combined while benefiting from the friction of their juxtapositions.

  • Creating interdisciplinary programs that are modeled on the best extant programs in other colleges and universities, but that challenge these models and move beyond them.

  • Treating technology not merely as a tool, but as one variable in the midst of changing ideas about space, theatre, images, texts, information, commerce, community, identity.

  • Blurring the boundaries of history and practice, studies and production, theory and studio given that the digital age has already forced this collusion.

Committed to putting the above principles into practice in the most expedient way possible, we realize our first attempts may be tentative and experimental but also realize these initial steps are essential parts of a lengthier productive process.
