the imagery

stillwater was shot at Middle Cove Beach, Newfoundland, in 2005. The palette is untouched, the speed and character of the water and the things it reveals/conceals has beeen manipulated. The passages and images evoke:

liquid skin
lava
quiet rocks
fast sheets
moving bubbles
water painting
composed planes
net patterns
blurred transparency

the music

consistent trickle
shrill then still
quiet and even
pushing pulse
pulling back
catch and release
call and response

The constant rhythms of the clear water flowing and twisting around the rocks and pebbles inspired a steady pulsating music that shifts with the irregular regularity of the water. I included sets of sounds that sparkle and glisten and add relief to the relentless yet somehow soothing pace.
